Ten Step Shed Building

Tens Steps to Building with Shed Plans

You’ve finally made the decision to build a storage shed in you backyard. You’ve already shopped around but don’t really like any of the sheds that are readily available. You don’t like the prices that much either. Here’s the good news. You can build from shed plans even if you have limited carpentry skills. All you really need is some good shed plans with easy to follow and easy to understand instructions. There are 10 steps to building using shed plans.

Step One

Is to determine where you want to build it. You need to have a designated area planned out before you begin. The space you have available will determine the maximum size you can build.

Step Two

Once you know your exact size it’s a good idea to rough sketch what you want. There are many home improvement stores that you can take your sketch to. Some building supply stores will draft up your storage shed plans for you, according to the specs you provide them with. They will also supply you with a list of materials that you will require.  In addition they will provide you with a guide on how to perform each step. There are also online companies that will sell you shed plans with easy to follow instructions and complete materials lists. My Shed Plans offers 12000 woodworking and shed plan designs.

Step Three

Purchase the materials you will need as outlined in your shed plan. It’s a good idea to have everything at hand so you don’t have to keep running out for supplies once you start construction.

Step Four

Now you are ready to start. Level your ground and prepare to lay the foundation. You would have already decided whether you are going to have a wood plank floor or concrete slab type.

Step Five

After the foundation you will build the shed side walls. Put aside the materials that you will need for this. It is easier to build the walls on the ground then lift them into position once they are together. Just follow your shed plan for the how to instructions.

Step Six

Now it’s time to start on the roof. You will need to build your trusses. So construct one and then use it as a template for the rest. Once again follow your shed building plans on how to build the trusses.

Step Seven

Your storage shed should now be taking shape. It’s time to build the end walls. How you do this will depend on what shed plan you chose. Be sure to stay with your original plans.

Step Eight

Now you are getting down to the final steps. The trim is just as important as the rest of your structure. It’s what gives it that finished look so don’t scrimp here.

Step Nine

Putting a roof on the shed is the next step. Normally tar paper or an equivalent underlayment is placed first and then your choice of roofing materials on top. Be very careful with this the roofing step. A good job will give you years of shed life and a poor job will cause aggravation and extra expense in the future.

Step Ten

The final step is to paint the shed. Pick the coating material that is best for your area. Varnish looks nice on a wood building but may have to be redone on a yearly basis. You want to pick a paint that will protect your shed from the elements and also look good for years.

There is one final stage to shed building. This step is the culmination of all your efforts. You’ve picked your shed plan, bought the materials, and have built your shed. Now it’s time to load the shed up with your garden tools, mower or whatever!
